Oak Dining Table Makeover

When we first moved into our home 16 years ago, we were searching for real wood furniture and ended up buying a big oak dining table and chair set.  I really didn’t like it.  Dean didn’t really like it either but we couldn’t find anything else at the time.

oak table makeoverIt has been a big eye sore for me… all the time… every Thanksgiving, I would cover it with a big tablecloth.  This year, I decided it was time for a change.  I had first planned to keep the mechanics inside this table (the table expands really nice with metal gears and has leaves that get stored inside of it) and put new wood on the top but changed my mind after I had started sanding it down.  I wanted to see if I could really just work with what was there.

These are the chairs I purchased from Amazon because I liked their lines.  I loved that the backs were taller than you would normally see.  I wasn’t sure how I would feel about them with the oval table, but it worked out well.

The chairs were unfinished, and I decided to paint them black.  I painted the entire underside of the table black as well.  I used two chairs from my second photography studio years ago to place at each end.  I have stored these chairs forever and didn’t know if I would ever use them.  This was the perfect opportunity.

dining tableI can’t tell you what color I used for the top.  I have so many different stains and paints in storage, so I pulled out a few and just started playing with them.  I’d wipe a color on, wipe it off, add another color on top, etc.

I really like the way this came out.

I even pulled a little bit of gray through the wood grain.  This is so much nicer than that awful orangey/yellowy color.
