Growing Zinnias from Seed in Zone 6 or 7
At the beginning of Spring 2017, I received a free packet of zinnia seeds with something I purchased. I can’t even remember what it was. At any rate, I don’t like clutter so I didn’t want the seed packet sitting around, so I put the seeds in some little expanding starter pods and they went crazy.
I had no idea how large zinnias grew – waist high; I put them in my back flower garden.
They thrived!!!! I was especially shocked at the colors. They were all so pretty.
Many different colors emerged. Just a few weeks ago, I collected the dried heads of a few and stored seeds for next year. Why not? I try to only plant perennials but these grew so easily, they are a super hardy and easy annual to grow.
I have a confession to make – totally off topic of flowers but is concerning being a photographer. I’m getting ready to drive off to a session this morning and I’m having an extra amount of shaking which is so annoying. I will explain.
As a photographer, I have always ALWAYS instructed to keep shutter speed high. To me, that is so important, but I have never really revealed why it’s even more important to me personally. I figured I would share this just in case others have issues that they may feel they are not alone.
I have what’s called benign familial tremor. It runs in my family. Some of us have it worse than others but I have been in denial about it for a long time. Mine is pretty mild. As I get older, however, I feel like I can’t control it as much. Not that I could control it – I’m really not sure what I have been doing. I just know it’s there, and if I catch my hands shaking, I usually hide them. However, I have noticed it more and more as I use and strengthen my muscles with the tasks I am doing around here. So if I hold out my arm and I’m straining, the tremors get a bit worse.
Unfortunately, sometimes people see a tremor in a young person (not that I’m all that young anymore lol!) and assume they are a drug user. Obviously, I don’t want people to think that of me…… but sometimes I catch my hands shaking while I am working with a newborn and I don’t want the parents to think I am scared to work with their newborn. I may be a bit more sensitive to it and they may not notice, but I notice. I was cashing a check the other day at the bank and the bank could not verify the signature on the check, and I stood in awkward silence and realized I was holding my phone in my right hand, and my hand was shaking. Great, now they are thinking I’m committing fraud or something and scared of getting caught *sigh*.
At any rate, it does not effect me except it does make me feel self conscious. The only thing I do as a photographer is keep my shutter speed above 1/500 as often as possible, yes, even with a 50 mm, and it doesn’t have any effect on my work.
so yeah… that’s the first time I have confessed that publicly, I believe… So anyway, back to the zinnias… they are simply gorgeous and I never really got the chance to learn about these flowers or see them in this many colors.
